SINGAPORE – ST Engineering’s marine business has secured a six-year subcontract valued at an estimated $600 million from Abu Dhabi Ship Building (ADSB), a shipbuilder based in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
The contract is for the design and supply of platform systems for a fleet of eight missile gunboats that ADSB is constructing for the Kuwait Naval Force, the group said on April 1.
Besides delivering a full suite of platform design, integration and technical expertise, ST Engineering will build three of the vessels at its Singapore shipyard.
This follows an earlier contract awarded to ST Engineering in 2021 by ADSB for four similar offshore patrol vessels for the UAE Navy.
Mr Tan Leong Peng, president of ST Engineering’s marine business, said: “This win strengthens ST Engineering’s growing momentum in international defence markets, underscoring the group’s ability to deliver sophisticated naval platforms and capture rising demand for advanced maritime security solutions in the Middle East.”
The missile gunboats for the Kuwait Naval Force will be based on ST Engineering’s proprietary Fearless-class patrol vessel. It is purpose-built for versatility and reliability, making it “well-suited” for operations in the Middle East, the group said.
ST Engineering said its design features high redundancy for critical systems to maximise mission readiness and support continuous operations.
The vessels will also incorporate advanced platform systems that enhance navigation precision and manoeuvrability, it added. This will enable strong performance in littoral and blue-water deployments, prolonged patrols and naval duties across challenging maritime environments.
“The growing acceptance of our design across the Middle East, in Oman, (the) UAE and now Kuwait, reflects customer confidence in its robust operational performance and adaptability,” Mr Tan said.
ST Engineering provides turnkey naval shipbuilding and has more than 50 years of expertise in naval vessel design and engineering. The group said its marine business continues to invest in smart technologies, which enable the construction of advanced, mission-ready platforms for modern naval forces. THE BUSINESS TIMES
